Oak Picture Frames

Solid oak framing with a clean, natural finish

Oak picture frames are chosen for their straight grain, steady weight and timeless look. They suit everything from family photographs and graduation certificates to fine art prints, line drawings and framed textile pieces. Because oak has a natural tone, it works well with both modern interiors and more traditional rooms, especially where people want warmth without a heavy look.

Our oak frames are made for wall display and can be supplied as custom framing or as ready-made options in common sizes. The frame profile can be kept slim for a quiet finish or made deeper for a stronger gallery feel. We cut and fit each order carefully, and check the corners, backing and hanging points before it leaves the studio.

  • Suitable for photos, certificates, prints, documents and light textiles
  • Available in natural, stained or painted oak finishes, depending on the look needed
  • Can be paired with clear glass, non-reflective glass or acrylic glazing
  • Works for single items or grouped wall displays

Sizes, mount options and glazing choices

Oak frames can be made to your exact artwork size or supplied in standard formats such as A4, A3, 30 x 40 cm, 40 x 50 cm, 50 x 70 cm and larger. If your item is not a standard size, we measure to the nearest millimetre and cut the frame and mount to suit. For certificates, we normally recommend a mount so the page does not sit hard against the glass.

In humid coastal areas such as Durban and Cape Town, and in homes where sunlight is strong, glazing choice matters. Standard glass is fine for many pieces, while non-reflective glass helps reduce glare in bright rooms and reception areas. Acrylic is lighter and safer where there is a higher chance of movement or impact. For valuable or sentimental pieces, a conservation approach is worth considering.

  • Standard sizes and custom sizes available
  • Single or double mounts can be added for better presentation
  • Choice of clear glass, non-reflective glass or acrylic
  • Spacer options available for thicker items or relief work

Where oak picture frames suit best

Oak picture frames suit homes, schools, studios, offices, churches, restaurants and small galleries. In Parkhurst homes, they often work well with natural timber floors and neutral walls. In Sandton offices or Pretoria boardrooms, they give certificates and awards a smart finish without looking too formal. In galleries, oak can be used to frame prints, photographs and editioned work where the timber adds presence but does not distract from the image.

We also see oak frames used for wedding photos, inherited family pictures and documents that need a neat, lasting presentation. If you are hanging a group of frames together, oak is a good choice because the tone stays consistent and the frame line reads clearly from across the room. It is a practical option for a passage, staircase wall or reception area that needs a tidy and ordered finish.

  • Good for living rooms, studies, reception areas and gallery walls
  • Useful for awards, certificates and framed memorabilia
  • Can be matched across several rooms for a consistent look

Fitting, hanging and what the frame needs on site

Picture frames do not need power or gas, and oak frames are installed using standard hanging hardware. For larger pieces, we recommend proper wall fixing so the frame sits level and secure. On plasterboard walls, brick, concrete or tiled surfaces, the fixing method changes, so it helps to know what the wall is made of before ordering. If the frame will hang in a public space or gallery, let us know so we can suggest a more suitable hanging method.

We handle collection and delivery across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand, Rosebank, Sandton, Cape Town and Durban. If you need installation for a home or gallery, we can advise on placement, spacing and height. For heavy glazed frames, two hangers may be better than one. If you plan to place the frame in a hallway with foot traffic or near a door, it is worth considering a stronger hanging solution and a slightly deeper frame profile.

  • No electricity, water or gas required
  • Standard hanging hooks, wire or security fixings can be used
  • Wall type should be confirmed before installation
  • Installation advice available for homes, offices and galleries

Care in South African homes and changing weather

Oak is a natural material, so it should be kept away from direct rain, damp walls and long exposure to strong sun. In Johannesburg, dust and dry air can build up on the surface, while in coastal homes moisture can affect timber if the frame is placed too close to a window or air vent. Wipe the frame with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh cleaners. If the frame has glass, use a cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the surface.

If the artwork inside needs changing, we can reframe it, replace the mount or fit new glass. Over time, backing boards can mark or loosen and the hanging wire may need checking, especially on larger frames. A frame that is handled often, moved between homes or used in a gallery setting may need occasional servicing to keep it in good condition. That small bit of care helps the frame last much longer than a quick, cheap fitment.

  • Keep out of direct sun where possible
  • Avoid damp walls, bathrooms and unventilated corners
  • Dust with a soft cloth, never abrasive pads
  • Bring in for repair or refitting if corners loosen or glass chips

What to check before you order an oak frame

Before ordering, measure the artwork accurately and decide whether you want the full item visible or covered slightly by a mount. Check whether the piece is flat, fragile, signed or textured, as that changes the fitting approach. If the item is a certificate, ask whether you want it centred, floated or mounted with a border. If it is a print, confirm the orientation and whether you want a wide frame or a slimmer profile. A little planning at this stage saves time later.

It also helps to think about the room where the frame will hang. A bright room in Cape Town may need non-reflective glass, while a more shaded hallway in Midrand may suit standard glass. If you are framing a set of pieces, say whether they need to match exactly or simply sit well together. Our studio team in Parkhurst can guide you through the choices and make sure the finished piece feels right for the space, not just the item inside it.

Questions we get asked

Can oak picture frames be made to a custom size?

Yes. We cut oak frames to the artwork size you give us, including non-standard sizes and set mount widths if needed.

Do oak frames need special installation?

No special power or gas is needed. They are fitted with normal hanging hardware, but heavy frames should be matched to the correct wall fixing.

How do I keep an oak frame in good condition?

Keep it away from damp walls and direct sun, dust it with a soft cloth, and bring it in if the corners, backing or hanging wire need attention.
