Glass Replacement

Broken, chipped or scratched glazing can be replaced cleanly and safely, without disturbing the artwork or frame. Bright Frames handles glass replacement for homes, offices and galleries from Parkhurst to Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Midrand.

Glass Replacement

When the glazing needs replacing

Glass replacement is often needed after a frame has been bumped in transit, a piece has been dropped during hanging, or the surface has been marked by dust, cleaning product or ageing. In many homes across Johannesburg and the coastal areas, moisture and dust can also leave glazing looking cloudy or tired, especially on pieces near kitchens, passages or sunlit walls.

We replace broken, scratched or ill fitting glazing on framed photographs, certificates, prints, artworks and mirrors. The aim is to protect the item properly again, while keeping the look of the frame neat and consistent with the space. For galleries and offices, we also work on repeat orders where several frames need new glazing in one visit.

  • Cracked or shattered glass
  • Scratched front glazing
  • Loose or rattling glazing inside the frame
  • Old glazing that no longer sits square
  • Fogging or residue that cannot be cleaned out

What we replace and how we spec it

Every frame is checked before any glass is cut. We measure the visible opening, check the rebate depth, confirm the frame profile and make sure the replacement sits safely without pressure on the artwork. Where needed, we also advise on whether the piece should move to a different type of glazing for better protection or easier cleaning.

We work with clear glazing in common picture framing thicknesses, and we cut each piece to size for a snug fit. For larger frames, heavier mirrors and pieces that will be handled often, we can recommend the right option based on weight, edge protection and the way the frame will be mounted on the wall.

  • Measured to the frame opening and rebate depth
  • Cut with clean edges for safe handling
  • Checked for square corners and proper fit
  • Suitable for standard frames, mirrors and gallery pieces
  • Options discussed according to use, position and budget

Our replacement process from intake to refit

We keep the process straightforward. If the frame can come into the Parkhurst studio, we inspect it first and confirm what needs replacing. For larger jobs, or where several items are involved, collection and delivery can be arranged in line with the job size and area. We handle the item carefully, remove the damaged glazing, clean out the frame channel and refit the new piece with proper spacing and support.

The team then checks that the artwork is seated correctly, the backing is secure and the frame closes properly. If there are signs of damage to the mount, backing board or frame edges, we will point those out before finishing the job. Sipho Maseko and the studio team keep the process practical, so you know exactly what is being done and why.

  • Inspection and measurement
  • Removal of broken or marked glazing
  • Cleaning of the frame channel and surrounding area
  • Cutting and fitting of the new glazing
  • Final check for fit, safety and presentation

Turnaround times for homes, galleries and offices

Turnaround depends on the size of the frame, the number of pieces and whether the item needs to be collected. A single standard frame can often be turned around quickly once the measurements are confirmed, while multiple frames for a gallery wall or office fitout may need a little more time. If a frame needs matching work or any further repair, we will factor that in before starting.

In Johannesburg and Pretoria, small replacement jobs are often handled faster because items can be brought directly to the studio. In Cape Town, Durban and other service areas, timing depends on the logistics of collection or delivery. We will always give a clear expectation before the work begins, rather than leaving you guessing.

  • Single frames: usually quicker to complete
  • Multiple frames: planned as a batch where possible
  • Large mirrors: allow extra time for handling and fit
  • Urgent gallery jobs: discussed case by case

Pricing that matches the frame, not guesswork

Glass replacement is priced according to the frame size, glazing type, quantity and any additional handling needed. That means a small family photograph in a standard frame is priced differently from a large mirror or a gallery piece that needs careful dismantling. If there are other issues, such as frame repairs or fresh mount cutting, those are quoted separately so you can see where the cost sits.

We prefer clear pricing from the outset. Once we have the dimensions and seen the frame, we can explain the likely cost band and what will affect it. For repeat clients, artists and galleries, we can also quote on multiple pieces at once, which helps when several frames need attention after transport or installation.

  • Based on size, glazing type and quantity
  • Quoted before work starts
  • Separate pricing for repairs or related services
  • Useful for one off pieces and larger batches

How to keep replacement glass in good condition

Once new glazing is fitted, a little regular care keeps it looking good for longer. Use a soft dry cloth for dusting and avoid rough paper or strong household cleaners that can leave streaks. In coastal areas like Durban, and in spaces with frequent dust or aircon, it helps to check frames a bit more often because grime can build up around the edges.

For frames in strong light, near cooking areas, or in public spaces where they are touched more often, we recommend a routine check every 12 to 24 months. That is a good point to look for movement in the frame, loosened backing, or fine scratches that may have developed over time. If you notice any rattling or a small chip, it is better to deal with it early rather than wait for a bigger break.

  • Dust with a soft, clean cloth
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and rough pads
  • Check wall hung pieces every 12 to 24 months
  • Inspect more often in humid or high traffic areas

Questions we get asked

Can you replace glass without replacing the whole frame?

Yes. In most cases only the glazing needs to be replaced, provided the frame and backing are still in good condition.

What if the frame has also been damaged?

We can inspect the frame at the same time and advise whether it needs repair, refitting or a full reworking before the new glass goes in.

Do you handle more than one frame at a time?

Yes. We often replace glazing for several frames in one batch, which is useful for galleries, offices and home collections.
